British Foreign Office has added eleven more countries to its public advisory list concerning the risks of methanol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, following multiple serious events like the tragic demise of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol typically used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not intended for human consumption.

Although it is naturally produced during the creation of spirits, reputable manufacturers bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.

Yet in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.

Authorities' Recommendations for Travellers

Authorities representative a senior official emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks overseas, choose reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the official warned.

"Should anything seems unusual, for example a hangover that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention right away."

The full roster of nations noted as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
